VILLAGE

In East Hampshire, famous as the home of author Jane Austen.

Mentioned in Domesday Book.  Never developed into a settlement of substance, largely due toactions of local Lords of the Manor in 18th centuery, who enclosed common land, thus depriving labouring families of grounds to grow crops and obtain forage for their cattle.
