YARNTON's Cyclone 1966

We have been contacted by Chris Vasper, whose father was a Royal Signals Sergeant and Ham Radio operator, taking passage in YARNTON in 1966 when she was based in the Gulf and on transit to India, when she was hit by a cyclone, lost all power and disabled, drifting, it is understood, for a couple of days.

Sgt Vasper's Ham radio was the only equipment that worked, since it was powered independently of the ship's supply, and he was able to contact a fellow Royal Signals Ham radio enthusiast, who in turn, contacted the RN to put a rescue into operation.
