VILLAGE
Part of Richmond upon Thames
Remains of Iron Age furnace found in 1999.
In Saxon times the manor belonged to Aelfgar, Earl of Mercia, but was granted to Walter de St Valery by William the Conqueror.
Around 1550 gunpowder began to be manufactured on Hounslow Heath and remained in operation until 1927
In the 16th century fashionable people moved out of Twickenham to build grand houses in Whitton.
Around 1640, Edmund Cooke built a large house close to the centre of the village. This was subsequently bought by the Court Painter Sir Godfrey Kneller, who had it demolished to build something more grand, which he named Kneller Hall. This was later home to the Royal Military School of Music until 2021 and will be well-known to any who have attended the Army v Navy rugby match at Twickenham.
