VILLAGE
Tarlton is a small attractive Cotswold village, 4 miles South East of Stroud and 5 miles South West of Cirencester, close to the source of the River Thames. It lhas a population of about 80, widely scattered over an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its history dates back to Roman times, when retired legionaries were granted lands to farm along the Severn Valley. The Saxon Lord of the Manor was dispossessed following the Norman invasion and the village is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Its name derives from the Norman "Tomentone"..The church of St Lawrence is a Chapel of Ease dating to the eleventh century. In the Middle Ages the village became a market centre where farmers and itinerant traders met. Subsequently corn mills and small factories were developed but surviving significant buildings from those times have recently been converted into private homes.
