In Hertfordshire, 6 miles West of Hitchin, adjacent to Bedfordshire on the Chiltern Hills and the prehistoric Ickneild Way.

In the middle ages the village passed into the lands of St Albans abbey. Nearby Hexton Manor dates from 15th century and was substantially altered in 1901.
