VILLAGE

Name derives from Saxon "Fishing Town" presumably with fish traps and/or deep pools in river.

Two villages found in Nottingham and Lincolnshire.

In Nottingham, on river Trent, 3 miles South East of Southwell.

Mentioned in Domesday Book.

In 1800's expensive properties were developed along the river for merchants commuting to Nottingham. These were later joined by warehouses, as Nottingham expanded, but opening of Nottingham - Lincoln railway in 1846 took trade away from the river. Still several significant mansions in the area.

In Lincolnshire, 6 miles East of Lincoln. iron age artefacts have been disciovered in the fens, notably the Witham Shield, plus an ancient wooden causeway, spears swords and a hollowed out  log boat dated to 450-300 BC. Temporary airfield in WW2.
